Huntet

Mr. Lee credibly states that he was in the streets to protest unlawful police violence against black men, and there is no basis to disbelieve this statement. Mr. Lee, appropriately, acknowledges that he “could have demonstrated in a different way,” but that he was “caught up in the fury of the mob after living as a black man watching his peers suffer at the hands of police.” As anyone watching the news world-wide knows, many other people in Minnesota were similarly caught up. There appear to have been many people in those days looking only to exploit the chaos and disorder in the interest of personal gain or random violence. There appear also to have been many people who felt angry, frustrated, and disenfranchised, and who were attempting, in many cases in an unacceptably reckless and dangerous manner, to give voice to those feelings. Mr. Lee appears to be squarely in this latter category. And even the great American advocate for non-violence and social justice, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stated in an interview with CBS’s Mike Wallace in 1966 that “we’ve got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard.”

It was a jaw-dropping, hard-to-believe justification for a deadly crime by a habitual criminal. Lee was only protesting “unlawful police violence,” federal prosecutors argued. He felt “frustrated” and “disenfranchised.” He was “caught up in the fury of the mob.” And then: Judge, you must understand that even though the riot was deadly, and even though Lee played a particularly ugly role, he truly believed he was engaging in “the language of the unheard.”

That was then. Now, of course, we are watching the same DOJ seek maximum sentences against defendants who took part in the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Do prosecutors routinely seek reduced sentences by telling judges that the Jan. 6 rioters felt “frustrated” and “disenfranchised”? Do prosecutors concede that the rioters got out of hand but excuse their behavior by arguing they were just “caught up in the fury of the mob”? And do they quote King to justify the rioters’ acts by contending that they really believed they were engaging in “the language of the unheard”?

“This is a movement and anyone who thinks that you can apply the old political rules to trying to defeat this candidate based on he’s scary, he’s ugly, whatever you might want to call him. This is a movement and we have to respect the fact that it’s a movement.”

The Federalist skriver

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly began handing down sentences for “Proud Boy” defendants convicted in the turmoil of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Joseph Biggs, who led dozens of demonstrators at the Capitol, was given a 17-year sentence by the judge on Aug. 31. Two more Proud Boy activists were sentenced to a combined 28 years on Friday. Ethan Nordean, the leader of a Seattle chapter, was given an 18-year sentence, and Dominic Pezzola was sentenced to 10 years.

The latest sentence came down on Tuesday for Proud Boy Chairman Enrique Tarrio who the judge gave 22 years.

Federal prosecutors used terrorist enhancements to extend the convicts’ sentences over a riot where the only fatal victims were pro-Trump demonstrators. Biggs’ 17-year stay was enhanced over the defendant’s destruction of a fence on Capitol grounds.

In January, a federal judge sentenced a pair of disbarred attorneys to just more than a year in prison for setting ablaze a New York City police car with a Molotov cocktail.

While prosecutors similarly used terrorist enhancements to recommend longer prison sentences, the requested term was only for 18-24 months for ex-lawyer Colinford Mattis in contrast to the decades sought for Jan. 6 defendants.

Given the contrast between Jan. 6 prisoners and left-wing anarchists, it should come as no surprise that the most vitriolic of the D.C. judges to preside over Capitol riot defendants is also assigned to former President Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 case.

Enrique Tarrio var end ikke i Washington 6/1 23. “Only 8% of DC jurors would give Trump the presumption of innocence they are Constitutionally obliged to give. Makes a fair trial in DC a joke.skriver Robert Barnes

D.C. POLL

If you were a member of the jury in the trial of Donald Trump, how would you vote on the charge that he used unlawful means in an attempt to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election?

64% guilty

8% innocent

28% unsure

Nejourde Meacham, a Utah resident who traveled to Washington D.C. for former President Donald Trump’s “Save America” rally on January 5, was facing four misdemeanors stemming from his brief entry into the building. Meacham — along with his uncle, Odin Meacham — was arrested in May after a voluntary interview with the FBI.

(…)

Meacham was arrested more than two years after the January 6 Capitol protest and minor riot.

On Friday, September 1, 2023, Kansas-based activist FreeStateWill reported that Meacham had passed away. Independent reporter Julie Kelly soon reported that the 22-year-old had taken his own life, citing a “very reliable” source.

In 2022, Pennsylvania native Matthew Perna hanged himself after federal prosecutors planned to hit him with terrorism charges due to his brief appearance at the U.S. Capitol.
