Ytringsfrihed Truer Demokratiet

Do you remember this iconic image on the left? Well Stanford Internet Observatory & the Atlantic Council tracked it & worked to get similar images mass banned from the Internet the day after the 2020 election.

Media pundits presaged these ballot patterns with eyebrow-raising accuracy. “This Election Night could mark the beginning, not the end, of the process, and giving voters a false sense of who is winning, according to a wide array of experts,” reported CNN, two months before the 2020 election. “Early vote counts in the most competitive, battleground states can be particularly misleading this election because of the surge in mail-in or absentee ballots, and the different ways that they are processed,” warned Reuters, a few weeks before the election.

In 2021, the DHS-linked Election Integrity Partnership released a report titled The Long Fuse: Misinformation and the 2020 Election. The report, nearly 300 pages long, details the partnership’s activities in the 2020 election, setting up a dashboard that allowed the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department to file “tickets” on social media posts, flagging them so that Big Tech platforms could suppress or add warning labels to them. By the EIP’s own estimation, over 22 million tweets were labeled “misinformation” as a result of its activities.

Of particular concern to the EIP were images that depicted the “red mirage, blue shift” pattern.

“This is a big deal” skrev Elon Musk. Men “censorship by private companies is also an attack on free speech”, mindede Jonathan Turley på.

A once-robust alliance of federal agencies, tech companies, election officials and researchers that worked together to thwart foreign propaganda and disinformation has fragmented after years of sustained Republican attacks.

The GOP offensive started during the 2020 election as public critiques and has since escalated into lawsuits, governmental inquiries and public relations campaigns that have succeeded in stopping almost all coordination between the government and social media platforms.

(…)

More than a dozen current and former government and tech employees who have been involved in fighting online manipulation campaigns and election falsehoods since 2020 echoed those concerns. Most agreed to speak only on the condition that they not be named, all citing the current climate of harassment against people who work in election and information integrity.

A common theme among those interviewed: The chilling effect that Republican attacks had on the sharing of information about possible interference, which could make it easier for foreign adversaries to manipulate U.S. public opinion and harder for 2024 voters to sort out what’s real from what’s fake.

Beyond the FBI briefings, other coordination efforts have folded after facing pressure from conservatives. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which oversees federal election cybersecurity and has become a favorite target of Republicans, has halted its outreach to Silicon Valley, and the Department of Homeland Security has shuttered a board designed to coordinate its anti-disinformation programs.

Fjender af demokratiet er der nok af, skriver Washington Times: “More whistleblowers have stepped forward to tell Congress that high-ranking FBI officials are targeting agents, specifically former military members, for their political beliefs and trying to force them out of the bureau.”
