I en blanding af korruption, ideologi og inkompetence var de i færd med at trække USA og Rusland ind i en atomkrig – og nu får de deres bekomst. Det er ganske inspireret af Godfather, men gangster sammenligninger er heller ikke af vejen.
Trump har længe forhandlet med Kreml og Kiev om at afslutte krigen, men ikke alle er lige optimistiske. En af pessimisterne, der skønt han helst ser sig tage fejl, er John Mearsheimer. Mearsheirmers ord er værd at lytte opmærksomt til, da han med amerikanernes kup af Kiev i 2014 forudså at det ville ende med, at Rusland ville invadere Ukraine, hvis amerikanerne og europæerne fremturede. Ikke blot det, men han forudså også og med den største selvfølgelighed, der giver anelser om et sinistert spil fra Vesten, at russerne ville tage netop det stykke land, som de har nu, da det er strategisk og har russisk befolkning, og så efterlade resten af Ukraine “a rump state” uden gavn for nogle.
Når Putin siger at Zelinsky ikke er en legitim præsident, er det fordi han frygter, at en eventuel aftale vil blive ophævet, med netop den begrundelse. John Mearsheimer sporer Kremls mistænksomhed tilbage til slutningen på den Kolde Krig, hvor Rusland blev lovet at NATO ikke ville udvides mod øst, “not one inch”, men ikke fik garantien på skrift. Putin vil under ingen omstændigheder have Ukraine med i NATO.
Af samme grund stoler Putin heller ikke på USAs præsidents ord, da Trump afløses af en ny præsident om 4 år. Derfor skal en aftale stemme igennem Kongressen, hvor de amerikanske politikere har fyldt deres sociale profiler med ‘Slava Ukraini’. Mearsheimer er dog ikke i tvivl om at Trump gerne ser USA ude af denne perspektivløse krig
Og så til optimisterne, som ikke er eksperter i sikkerhedspolitik eller Rusland og Ukraine, men derimod eksperter i at forhandle, nemlig forretningsmændene, hos hvem “there’s fresh optimism that the conflict will end and war-ravaged Ukraine could once again start receiving flows of private capital brokered by the big banks” skrev Charles Gasparino i New York Post i sidste uge og gerådede sig så ellers ud i sin egen forståelse af storpolitik
